C. F. GREINER

C. F. Greiner, pioneer resident of Saugatuck, Michigan, was born in Pliederhausen, Wurtemmburg, Germany, Dec. 24, 1832. He came to America at the age of eighteen and for several years traveled about as a journeyman tanner. In 1862 he married Helena Schumacher who then resided near Holland, Michigan, but who had come with her parents, Herman and Sophia Schumacher, from Prussia two years previous. In 1863 Mr. and Mrs. Greiner and their infant son. Frank W., moved from Holland, Michigan, to a small farm 2 ½ miles north of Saugatuck. Here were born three more sons: "Lonnie" who died in early childhood, C.Frederick, Jr., and Herman A. Greiner.

For many years C. F. Greiner, Sr., was foreman of Wallin's Tannery. In the spring of 1877 he went to California and died in San Jose in September of the same year. Mrs. Greiner and the children remained in Saugatuck for several years, later moving to Allegan, Mich. Still later she moved to Seattle where she remained until her death in 1913.

Frank W. Greiner, the eldest son, graduated in Chicago as an M. D. in 1896 and has since practiced medicine and surgery in Wisconsin, Michigan and in Seattle, Washington.
